Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a new T20 league that will begin the latter half of 2018. It’s to promote local Sri Lankan players to world stage because suddenly there is a dip in Sri Lankan Cricket talents. The team has encountered several series losses in the past couple of years.
The new tournament gets a name as “Lankan Premier League” (LPL) and it’s scheduled from August 10 to September 10, as announced by SLC.
Since the country’s national team has no international commitments, all players from Sri Lanka are set to participate.
Moreover, SLC will have an LPL 2018 auctions in order to recruit foreign talents and they could target Bangladesh, New Zeland, and Australian players.
The LPL 2018 will clash with Caribbean Premier League (CPL) set to be played from August 8 to September 16 and England’s T20 Blast. The LPL 2018 schedule is quite long and much like other T20 tournaments in the world. Recently concluded Hong Kong T20 Blitz lasted for only a week or so.
According to SLC officials, the new T20 tournament will feature six teams in the inaugural edition.
Each team will play same opposition twice in the initial round. Further schedule and dates weren’t announced.
Sri Lanka Cricket Board hopes to get some local talents which can boost their national Test, ODI, and T20 team.
