Gujarat Lions has defeated Kolkatta Knight Riders by 4 wickets and 10 balls to spare in the 23rd match of Indian Premier League 2017 played at Eden Gardens, Kolkatta. It’s the second win for Gujarat this season as they have struggled early-on. Gujarat Lions Captain, Suresh Raina hit 84 runs off 46 balls in the chase and also picked up a wicket of Sunil Narine and set up the tempo for Gujarat Lions bowlers who have struggled to pick wickets.
After winning the toss, Gujarat Lions put the home team, KKR to bat first. KKR openers Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Narine were off to a blazing start as Narine hit 42 off 17 balls with 9 fours and one six as he scores all the runs in boundaries only – the most for any batsman in the IPL history. Kolkatta went past 100 runs in the 10.1 overs and was looking dangerous. Gambhir’s 33 in 28 balls and Robin Uthappa’s 72 off 48 balls help’s KKR to put 187 runs on the scoreboard after the end of the first inning.
For the Gujarat Lions to win, they needed a strong start from their openers and indeed they got one as they scored 72 runs in the powerplay. Aaron Finch scored 31 off 15 balls and McCullum added 33 off 17 balls. Captain Suresh Raina made short work of the 188-run chase with a blistering 84 with four sixes and nine fours in his inning. At the end, Gujarat Lions wins by 4 wickets with 10 balls remaining, something that Gujarat Lions team should be proud as it’s hard to defeat KKR at home.
This IPL season, Gujarat Lions has the most destructive batting lineup with Aaron Finch, Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan, all capable to strike the ball hard. Their middle-order also looks strong with all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner but their bowlers have let them down. The pace attack is led by Andrew Tye, Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni and Basil Thampi For them, the absence of Dale Steyn and Dwayne Bravo is hurting a lot.
