In a fight for top two slots in the points table, Mumbai Indians defeat Kolkatta Knight Riders by 9 runs to topped the group stage of IPL 2017. On the other hand, Kolkatta will have to go through eliminator and then to second play-off match to reach the IPL 2017 final.
Quite surprisingly Mumbai made six changes to their playing XI for the match but still then won the match. Mumbai posted a modest 173 on the scoreboard, credit to half-centuries from Ambati Rayudu and Saurabh Tiwary. Their inning was about these new batsman who were playing for the first time this season. Both were involved in 61 run partnership for the third wicket. Tiwary was dismissed on 52 off 43 balls while Rayudu scored 63 off 37 balls.
Kolkatta has never lost a match while chasing at Eden Gardens since 2013 but against Mumbai, odds were against them. As usual, Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to bowl first.
In the chase, Knight Riders were in control of the required run-rate but they kept losing wickets at a regular intervals. Five batsmen go to their 20’s and yet top-scorer was only 33. No body really batted responsibility except Manish Pandey’s 33, although it was a run a ball inning, atleast tried to take them till the end, which is what some of the other batsmen needed to do. Yusuf Pathan got 20 runs in 7 balls before be was dismissed by Vinay Kumar in the ninth over. Grandhomme & Manish partnership threatened Mumbai but once he was dismissed by Hardik Pandya in the fifteenth over, match swung in Mumbai’s favour, credit to their disciplined bowlers and fielding.
