Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has defeated Gujarat Lions (GL) by 22 runs in the 20th league match of Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL 2017).
Played at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot, Gujarat Lion’s captain Suresh Raina opted to bowl first in front of their home crowd. Both Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle returned to form as both openers put on a hundred-run partnership. While Kohli made 64 runs in 50 balls, Gayle scored 77 runs in 38 balls with 7 sixes and 5 fours. With this inning, Chris Gayle brought an end to his 17 T20 innings without a half-century.
Big opening partnership and useful contribution from Travis Head and Kedhar Jadhav, RCB posted a total of 213 runs on the scoreboard.
In reply to RCB total, Dwayne Smith was dismissed cheaply by Chahal in the second over of the inning. Chahal picked up his second wicket in his second over as he dismissed Suresh Raina as Gujarat Lions were reduced to 37 for 2 after four overs. Wickets kept tumbling at other end and it was only Brendon McCullum who was up for a fight. He displayed staggering six hitting capabilities in his inning of 44-ball 72.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up three top-order batsmen and gave away only 31 runs in his quota of four overs. Ishan Kishan, the 18 years old wicket-keeper batsman, who has led India at the Under-19 World Cup last year, played a cameo with quickfire 39 runs in 16 balls with four sixes, but that wasn’t enough to chase down 213.
