At 22nd Asian Athletics Championships, Indian athlete G Lakshmanan wins Gold in Men’s 5000 meter race and Ambala’s Manpreet Kaur bags Gold in women’s Shot put on the opening day of the competition at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India on 6th July 2017.

Manpreet Kaur gold marks the debut of Gold medal for India at Asian Athletics Championships medal tally. She threw 18.28m to claim top medal. The 27 year old Manpreet is the mother of a five year old and holds many Indian records.

Govindan Lakshmanan has tough finish during the race. Yasir Salem Bagharab of Qatar won the silver while Tariq Ahmed Al-Amri of Saudi Arabia bagged the bronze medal in the race. There wasn’t much difference among the winner as Govindan completed the race in 14:54.48 while Yaser was just a second late, finish the race in 14:55.89. He was followed by Tariq completing the race in 14:56.83.

A total of 655 athletes have participated at the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships 2017 in India. 94 athletes represents India, closely followed by China with 58.

With these two medals, India is on the top of medal tally with 2 golds and a total of 7 medals with 1 Silver and 4 bronze. China stood second with 2 gold medals on the opening day.
