The fourth and final Android O Developer Preview was released couple of days back and Google is on the verge of announcing the next Android version. Dubbed as “Android O” (for the being), every one is eager to know the Android 8.0 name. This year Android version will be named with a dessert starting with English letter-O. Android Oreo and Android Oatmeal are the two names that came forward but it looks like Google, just like Apple, will surprise us and might not go with that name at all. A new leak hints at Android 8.0 to be officially called as Android Octopus.
Google recently replaced the Easter Egg image in the Android O Developer Preview with Octopus now showing up. This Android Octopus image was discussed in a Reddit AMA. That discussions raises several questions.
Octopus is certainly a food prepared in a number of ways but clearly it’s not a dessert and 95% of people will agree with it.
Now that begs a serious question: does Google think octopus is a dessert? or is Android switching away from naming their OS version from dessert to something else?
While folks at Mountain View might not switch to any other Android naming system, it might be possible that Google wants to give the world a new cookie. Android Oreo or Android Octopus or Android Octopi, the question still remained unanswered.
Last year, before announcing Android 7.0 name, Google asked for public voting of the Android N name and Nougat received maximum votes and it was chosen.
The final version of Android 8.0 is expected is to release later this quarter and as a known fact it will be arriving first to Google Pixel, Nexus and Android One phones first. Maybe we might see the the upcoming Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 as the first devices to pack next Android version out of the box.
