Google releases Android Distribution Data for June 2017; Marshmallow now on top

Google has again released its Android distribution chart for the June month. This has come as an answer to Tim Cook, who in WWDC stated the difference in the usage of iOS 10. He stated that iOS 10 was found to be running at 86 percent on the iOS active devices compared to the Android Nougat which was at 7 percent for the month of May.

Google’s chart shows the Nougat adoption has now reached 10%, even though the number to be reached is quite far away, pertaining to that of Apple’s. Google feels that it has increased its reach if not beaten the former’s stats. Cook had indicated in his talk at the conference that the latest Android OS version distribution looked low due to Android’s OS version fragmentation. The release of the chart by Google reveals the fact that the company just responded to Cook’s reference and did not react much. Google aimed to give back to numbers rather than through words.

The best thing about the release is that Google had updated the Google Play distribution data which ended on June 5, 2017. The numbers revealed, Android Nougat now reached 9.5% (Android 7.0 is at 8.9 percent and Android 7.1 on 0.6 percent devices). Android Marshmallow seems to be the most used operating system with 31.2% share. Again Marshmallow 6.0 is most used in the category.

As per the data, Android Lollipop was shown with a total share of 30.8 percent of active Android devices (with Android 5.0 Lollipop running on 8.2 percent of devices and Android 5.1 Lollipop at 22.6 percent). Stats specify that Lollipop is highly used and is running on a majority of active Android devices.

Going further, Android Kitkat is running on 18.1 percent, whereas the Android Jelly Bean has a combined share of 8.8 percent. Ice Cream Sandwich and Android Gingerbread (v2.3.3-2.3.7) is at 0.8 percent share. The stats or the numbers are derived from the devices that visit the Google Play app, that supports Android 2.2 and above.

The company also updated the OpenGL version, where the OpenGL version 3.0 at 44 percent and OpenGL version 2.0 moved to 38.7 percent.

Of all that said and done, the updating of the above said OS is a strong reply to Apple, specifically to Tim Cook by Google even though no open comments were made in this regard by the company.
