Ignoring requests and threats from News Broadcasters Association (NBA), Broadcast Audience Research Council(BARC) released Arnab Goswami led news Republic TV channel ratings. Launched on May 6, the Republic TV opened with top BARC ratings in the debut week. This is also the first set of BARC data rating for Republic.

The ratings are based on impressions between May 6 and May 12(week 19). Republic ended the week with 2.11 million impressions(or 2117 impressions(000s)), 84.4% higher than Goswami’s former employer, Times Now. The market leader, Times Now is close behind with 1148 impressions (000s) in the English News category.

Last week, Times Now stood atop with 645 impressions (000s), followed by India Today with 368 (000s) impressions and NDTV took the third spot with 290 impressions (000s).

Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV claimed 52 percent viewership in the first week of operations. Republic then used their official Twitter handle to spread the word and celebrate this achievement with a number tweets.

Arnab also thanked people for trust in him and his new Republic channel. He said – “I feel blessed with love and support that Republic TV has received. I don’t know how to thank you for your support.”

Complaining to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) under TRAI interconnection regulation violation, NBA said that Republic TV is registered by various cable distribution platforms multiple times, which makes channel appear more than once in their electronic programme guide (EPG).

BARC weekly data

Further, NBA claims that BARC has released corrupt and inflated data for Republic TV which has caused a huge damage to India’s existing news TV channels.
