Mumbai Indians flummoxed by Dhoni, Sundar; Pune into the final

Rising Pune Supergiants flummox Mumbai Indians batsmen to defend a modest total of 162 runs. Rising Pune Supergiant overcomes the odds against them to beat Mumbai Indians by 20 runs. Pune gets their third win against Mumbai Indians this season even though visitors was without Ben Stokes, the most valuable player of IPL 2017.

Pune were put into bat on a Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, favorite ground for Mumbai’s chase. A couple of days back they almost chase down Kings XI Punjab’s 230. Credit to visitors as they utilised the conditions on a atypical slow surface.

Many would have thought the match is over when Pune lost Rahul Tripathi & Steven Smith in the space of six balls, reduced them to 9 for 2 in two overs. Visitors were reeling on 121 for 3 after 18 overs but last two overs of the Pune’s inning really made the difference as MS Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary smashed 41 runs to take them to 162. Pune believed they were never out of the game because couple of days back they defended 160 against the same opposition at Wankhede.

Even though visitors didn’t pickup a wicket in the first four overs, they kept things under control. After Simmons run-out and 17 years old Washington Sundar removed Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu in the same over to peg back Mumbai. He accounted for Pollard wicket to leave home team clueless.

It was only Parthiv Patel who stood at the crease to bring up his half-century but once he was dismissed in the fifteenth over, target was out of reach for Mumbai as they required 60 runs of the last five overs.

Washington Sundar was awarded Man of the Match award for his impressive bowling spell of 16 for 3 in four overs.

Despite losing this match, Mumbai still have a chance in the second qualifier in Bengaluru on Friday to make it to finals.
