India is known as a country of festivals. People celebrate all the festivals with lots of enthusiasm and belief. Season of Chhath Puja 2018 has arrived and it starts from October 24 to 27th this year. It’s called referred as Chhathi, Chhath Puja, Chhath Parv, Dala Chhath, Dala Puja or Surya Shashthi.
Chhath is one of the Hindu Vedic ancient festivals which is dedicated to Lord Surya( Sun), to please it to spread positivity on earth.
What is Chhath Festival?
Chhath is celebrated during the month of October or November soon after Diwali. The festival is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chattisgarh states of India. The puja is conducted for a period of 4 days and observers keep vrat(fast) for this period. Followed by Vrat people include holy bathing and other holy severities.
Why is Chhath Festival celebrated?
Sun God, the magnanimous source of energy gives light to the whole world. People in India believe that they should express gratitude to Surya for its numerous energy. Also, the Sun’s energy can cure deadly diseases like leprosy, jaundice, and increase the longevity of people.
Along with Sun God, Chhathi Mayi- wife of Sun God is also offered pooja.
It is said that the Draupathi was an ardent devotee of Lord Surya. She was blessed by Lord Surya with an extraordinary power of curing any deadly diseases. This power of Draupadi also helped the Pandavas to regain the Kingdom from Kauravas.
How to celebrate Chhath Puja?
Chhath Puja is celebrated for four days. Let’s see what people do for this four days.
First Day Of Chhath Puja, Nahai Khai
Nahai means to take bath and Khai mean to eat. On the first day of Chhath Puja, people take bath in the holy river and pray to Lord Surya. Then they take water from the river and cook food to offer it to Lord Surya.’
Second Day of Chhath Puja, Kharna
People usually keep fast for 8-12 hours without drinking water. The fast is terminated after doing Surya puja in the evening.
Third Day of Chhath Puja, Sandhya Argha
On the third day, devotees prepare food for Lord Surya and offer after the pooja.
Fourth Day of Chhath Puja, Suryodaya Argha
This is the last day of the puja, people go to the river banks early in the morning to offer puja and the festivals come to an end.
