Madhur Bhandarkar is back with a new social realistic film titled ‘Indu Sarkar‘. The movie is inspired by events that unfolded during the 1975 Emergency, a 21 months long period from 1975 to 1977 when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India. This period curbed the basic rights of all the citizens, opposition party leaders were jailed and the press was heavily censored.

The movie cast includes ‘Pink’ fame Kirti Kulhari who is playing the role of a housewife turned social activist. Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Sanjay Gandhi(Indira Gandhi’s son) and Supriya Vinod will foray in Bollywood with Indu Sarkar who got the chance to play the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Anupam Kher plays the role of a leftist leader who refuses to go against the system and Tota Roy Choudary roles the love interest of Kirti Khulari.

Indu Sarkar has become the subject of Congress’ire. Congress spokesperson Joytiraditya SciIndia said Indu Sarkar was fully sponsored, adding, “The Organisation and the individual who is behind the film is known to us. We totally condemn the false depictions in the film.

Talking about the film the 48-years old director says he made the movie to educate the young generation about Emergency. The Central Board of Film Certification Chief Pahlaj Nihalani said – “Indu Sarkar does not name anyone. There is no mention of Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi or anyone in the movie. You are only presuming the film is about them because of the physical resemblance.”

Madhur Bhandarkar is an epic director and looks for scripts which essay a social message. He won many awards for Fashion movie, which highlighted the life of Indian models and actress. ‘Chandani Bar’ and ‘Page 3’ movies did lots of wonders in Indian box office. Madhur Bhandarkar last movie ‘Calendar Girls’ was an extension of Fashion movie.

This is not, however, the first movie about the Emergency as “The Accidental Prime Minister“(yet to release) movie is all about the real life characters of politicians of an Emergency period from 1973-1977. Aandhi, Kissa Kursi Ka, and Soha Ali Khan’s 31st October were some of the movies which limelight the similar situations.

Upcoming movie Baadshaho starring Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, lleanaD’cruz is also inspired by an Emergency situation in India.
