Aamir Khan starrer Dangal has grossed Rs 2,000 crore in collection ($310 million USD) worldwide, becoming the first Bollywood movie to achieve the historical feat.
Not long ago Rs. 1000 in box-office collection was achieved by S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Bahubali 2:The Conclusion’. The Prabhas starrer quickly raced to Rs. 1500 crore and could have easily become the first movie to reach the feat of Rs. 2000 crore. But it was outdone by Dangal’s as it was released in China on 5 May across 9,000 screens, the widest ever release for any Indian film outside India. Without any surprise, the movie on the first day earned $2.2 million. It quickly raced to $190 million in the box office. Very quickly it became the highest grossing Indian film in China and with its success, China becomes the new heaven for Indian cinemas. It collected Rs. 542.3 crores in India and Rs. 1459 crore overseas and most revenues come from China.
Dangal was released on 21 December last year in the United States and worldwide on 23 December. It was the first Indian film to be screened at the 7th Beijing International Film Festival and received a standing ovation. In China, Aamir Khan is one of the famous Indian actors and audience in China loves him.
China allows only four Indian films to be released in a calendar year. After Dangal, it’s ‘Bahubali 2:The Beginning’ expected to release in China. No doubt that it will break Dangal’s record to become highest grossing Indian film ever but it’s definitely surprising to see Aamir Khan’s movie snatching SS Rajamouli’s movie entry into history books.
