Spirited England Book Semi-Final berth; Beats New Zealand by 87 Runs


Host team England becomes the first team to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2017 semi-finals as they beat New Zealand by 87 runs at Cardiff on Tuesday. Most of the Champions Trophy matches were affected by rain, England vs New Zealand game was lucky enough not to end in D/L method.

New Zeland captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to field first. All the England batsmen scored double-digit runs but nobody except Alex Hales, Jos Buttler, Stokes and Joe Root couldn’t carry forward to make a big score. Hales, Buttler and Root scored half-centuries with root top scoring again with 64 off 65 balls. This was for the 16th time that he has gone past 50 in 26 innings since the start of 2016. Jos Buttler scored 61 runs in 48 balls.

With contribution from all batsmen, England was all out for 310 in 49.3 overs. In the chase, New Zealand lost Luke Ronchi in the first over and Guptill-Williamson paired to add 62 runs for the second wicket. They were in control of the game as long as Kane Williamson was at the crease. At 158 for 2 in 30 overs, they were half a way through the target of 311 with 20 overs and 8 wickets remaining. But once Williamson departed, England bowlers took the control as they bowled the opposition out for 223, handing them an easy win by 87 runs. New Zealand lost their last eight wickets for 67 in 14 overs. The captain posted fighting 87 off 98 balls.

With this win, England has won back to back games while New Zealand is still looking for their first win. New Zealand and Bangladesh will keep an eye on England vs Australia game as their process depends on the results of it. After two no results games, Australia faces a must-win game against England.
