With the approval of Election Commission of India‘s (EC) proposal regarding the purchase of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail machines(VVPAT), the demand of using paper trail machines in future elections has been increased by the opposition parties. They are asking for the use of these machines along with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in order to clear doubts. Quickly responding to it, the central government has cleared the EC’s proposal to buy the VVPAT machines. The introduction of this new machine will allow voters to ensure the registration of their vote.

According to the Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister of India, or procurement of these machines, the center requires investing 3,173.43 crores for the arrangement of 16.15 lakh paper trail machines. The Election Commission says that the manufacturing of these machines will take place in Bharat Electronics Ltd and Electronics Corporation of India. The order of production of 16.15 machines has been passed which are estimated to be delivered by September 2018. Funds for this purpose have been distributed in two parts for payment. In the 2016-2017 financial year, 1,600 crores will be disbursed by the government while the remaining amount would be funded in 2018-19.

This decision is considered to be beneficial for the maintenance of transparency in the voting system as well as it will satisfy the voters by assuring them that they have successfully registered their votes. This machine will surely work as an additional lawyer for the transparency in elections.

The design of the device will be set to work like a printer, attached to the ballot unit. This machine will generate a slip when the button will be pressed by the voter. The slip will provide information to the voter about the name, symbol and the serial number of the candidate selected by them through EVM. It will be used in 2019 general elections.
