BCCI Confirms India’s Participation in Champions Trophy 2017; Squad Announcement Tomorrow

Indian team with ICC Champions Trophy 2015 |

BCCI has confirmed India’s participation at the Champions Trophy 2017 at its special general meeting on Sunday, May 7. India’s team squad for the Champions Trophy will be announced tomorrow.

BCCI wasn’t happy with ICC’s new finance model by which BCCI share of ICC revenues is materially cut. It was approved at the board meeting in April and India was only Full Member to object it and other full members also outvoted India.

Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) president Amitabh Choudhary said that – although team participation in Champions Trophy 2017, a major ICC event is confirmed, the negotiation continues with International Cricket board.

BCCI has already crossed the deadline to submit 15 member squad for Champion Trophy to be held in England from June 1st.

Defending Champions participation was in question for past couple of days. Former cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri & others preferred India’s participation in the ICC events until 2023 which includes 2019, 2023 ODI World Cups & ICC Test Championship 2021. As soon as the meeting was ended, Indian board notified about it to ICC.

Clouds loomed over revoking the Members Participating Agreement (MPA) which governs participation in ICC events. The court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), currently handling BCCI until a new constitution as per Lodha Committee’s recommendations is formed.

During the Sunda’s BCCI meeting, MSK Prasad was instructed to pick the squad and announce it within 24 hours, i.e., on Monday and submit it to ICC.

Virat Kohli will lead the team, with Dhoni likely to be included in the squad. Several IPL 2017 top performers like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat and Nitish Rana might find a place.

India will start the campaign against arch-rival Pakistan on June 4th at Edgbaston.
