In wake of Champions League 2017 Trophy preparation, England invited Ireland for a two-match ODI series and in the first match played on May 5, 2017 at Bristol, visitors were bundled out 126 in 33 overs. Adil Rashid preferred over Moeen Ali as England’s frontline spinner, ripped apart Ireland as he responded with career best 5 for 27.

Ireland won the toss and elected to bat first in their historic first ODI on England soil. Ed Joyce and Paul Stirling gave them a solid start as Ireland quickly put up 40 runs in 5.4 overs before Stirling was bowled by Wood. The next over, Joyce departed as he was caught leg before wicket by Willey. Incidentally, Stirling-Joyce partnership of 40 remained the highest of the inning as visitors after 81 for 2, lost 8 wickets for just 45 runs in 33 overs.

For England, apart from Rashid Khan’s match-winning 5 for 27, Joe Root picked up two wickets for 9 runs.

In chase of 127, Peter Chase gave Ireland early hope as he dismissed Jason Roy for a duck in the first over. As an experienced team, England knows how to recover from a bad start. Hales scored quickfire 55 of 39 balls and Joe Root scored unbeaten 49 as host chased the target in 20 overs to win by 7 wickets. Peter Chase picked up 3 wickets for 44.

Visiting team, Ireland needs to quickly rethink their strategy to level the series. Second ODI will be played on May 7 at Lord’s, London.
